Gardening Time Sessions
We are really fortunate to have a garden space at the front of our nursery, where we offer gardening time sessions for the toddlers and preschoolers.
Some children find it easier to learn and absorb information in an outside classroom , without the constraints of the four walls!! They love exploring all of the exciting learning opportunities that a growing garden has to offer.
We offer gardening time sessions for every toddler and preschool child at least once a week to supplement the time that every child spends in our courtyard space.
Our gardening time sessions include sowing seeds, planting plants, caring for our garden by weeding, digging and watering. The children are also encouraged to try some of our homegrown tasty produce that we have grown in our garden, the children especially enjoy the raspberries and hunting for strawberries in the summer!!
We also have lots of fun activities such as making and decorating plant pots for our flowers, making bird feeders for the birds in winter, making labels for our plants and watching and caring for caterpillars as they grow into butterflies. They will also learn about the importance of reducing, recycling and reusing waste by using the compost from the compost bin to grow their own vegetables, fruits and flowers.
We are a member of RHS Campaign for School Gardening and they believe that nurturing a passion for plants and our natural world does wonders for children and young people.
It can improve their:
- Physical and mental wellbeing
- Understanding of the environment and sustainability
- Confidence and self-esteem
- Teamwork and communication skills
- Literacy and numeracy skills
It also enriches the curriculum from science and maths, to art and literacy.
